What In Fact is Cloud Hosting?
What is cloud web hosting in reality? The term 'cloud' appears to be quite trendy in today's IT, World Wide Web and hosting parlance. Still, only a select few actually can say what cloud hosting is. Maybe it is a smart idea to inform yourself about cloud web hosting services. To render a very lengthy story short, we will firstly enlighten you on what cloud hosting is not.
1. Cloud Web Hosting is Not Confined to a Remote Disk Storage Only.
1. Delivering a remote disk storage solution, which involves one disk storage appliance for all users, does not convert any given service provider into a genuine cloud web hosting provider.
The cPanel web hosting distributors dub the ability to deliver remote file storage services a cloud web hosting solution. Up to now there is nothing bad about the cloud designation, but... we are discussing hosting services, not remote data storage solutions for private or business needs. There's always one "but", isn't there? It's not sufficient to dub a shared web hosting solution, powered by a single-server hosting platform, precisely like cPanel, a "cloud web hosting" service. That's because the remaining pieces of the entire web hosting platform must be functioning in precisely the same manner - this does not apply only to the remote data storage. The remaining services involved in the whole hosting process also have to be remote, separated and "clouded". And that's quite hard. A very scanty number of web hosting service providers can truly make it.
2. It Encompasses Domain Names, Electronic Mail Aliases, Databases, File Transfer Protocols, Web Hosting Control Panels, etc.
Cloud web hosting is not limited to a remote data storage only. We are discussing a hosting solution, serving lots of domain names, websites, email box accounts, and so on, aren't we?
To name a web hosting service a "cloud web hosting" one needs a lot more than supplying merely remote file storage mounts (or maybe servers). The email server(s) need to be devoted solely to the email associated services. Executing nothing else than these concrete procedures. There might be just one single or probably an entire group of electronic mail servers, determined by the overall server load produced. To have a real cloud web hosting solution, the remote database servers should be working as one, irrespective of their actual quantity. Doing nothing different. The same goes for the users' Control Panels, the FTP, etc.
3. There are Cloud Domain Servers (DNSs) too.
The DNSs (Domain Name Servers) of a real cloud web hosting provider will support multiple data center sites on different continents.
Here's an illustration of a DNS of a genuine cloud web hosting services provider:
dns1.webrunnerdomains.com
dns2.webrunnerdomains.com
If such a Domain Name Server is furnished by your web hosting packages provider, it's not a guarantee that there is a cloud hosting environment in use, but you can definitely be sure when you spot a DNS such as the one beneath:
dns658.hostgator.com
dns659.hostgator.com
that there isn't any cloud hosting service. This kind of DNS only indicates that the hosting platform in use is one-server based. Perhaps it's cPanel. cPanel is a single-server web hosting solution and has a market share of more than 98%. In cPanel's case, one physical machine takes care of all web hosting services (web, mail, DNS, databases, File Transfer Protocol, Control Panel(s), files, etc.).
Remote File Storage - The Twisted Interpretation of Cloud Web Hosting.
So, a cloud web hosting service is not confined exclusively to a remote file storage service, as multiple hosting suppliers wish it was. Unluckily for them, if that was the case, the majority of the file web hosting companies would have been classified as cloud hosting ones long ago! They are not referred to as such, since they merely offer file hosting solutions, not cloud web hosting services. The file hosting platform seems indeed very plain, when compared to the web hosting platform. The remote disk storage platform is not a cloud web hosting platform. It cannot be, because it's simply one simple fraction of the entire cloud web hosting platform. There's plenty more to be encountered in the cloud hosting platform: the hosting Control Panel cloud, the database clouds (MySQL, PostgreSQL), the DNS cloud, the File Transfer Protocol cloud, the e-mail cloud and... in the foreseeable future, maybe a bunch of brand new clouds we currently are not informed about will surface out of the blue.
